A study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), based on 24 years of satellite observations, suggests that the Earth is reflecting less sunlight than before. This reduction in Earth's reflectivity represents a trend that has concerned scientists.
The researchers discovered that this darkening does not occur uniformly across the planet. The northern hemisphere has become relatively darker compared to the southern hemisphere, an anomaly that scientists had not anticipated.
The data were collected over nearly three decades of satellite measurements, allowing researchers to identify distinct regional patterns in how sunlight is being reflected back into space.
This asymmetry between the two hemispheres represents an unexpected phenomenon that scientists are still trying to understand, raising questions about the possible causes of this regional difference in Earth's reflectivity behavior.
