Sales in Retail Trade Increased 2.0%: A Sign of Economic Recovery

In July, the Business Volume Index in Commerce grew 2.0% year-on-year, with retail trade standing out with an increase of 3.0%, while wholesale trade recorded more modest growth of 0.5%. The motor vehicle maintenance and repair sector showed a significant slowdown of 4.6 percentage points, settling at 3.9%. Regarding the labor market, employment in commerce fell 1.6%, although wages increased 4.8% and hours worked grew 1.1%, revealing a complex dynamics in the Portuguese commercial sector.

Em julho, o Índice de Volume de Negócios no Comércio apresentou uma variação homóloga de 2,0%, superando em 0,1 pontos percentuais a taxa registrada no mês anterior. Esse crescimento reflete um desempenho positivo no comércio a retalho, que teve um acréscimo de 3,0% em comparação ao mesmo período do ano passado, marcando um aumento de 0,3 p.p. em relação a junho. Por outro lado, o comércio por grosso registrou um leve crescimento de 0,5%, após uma diminuição de 0,6% observada no mês anterior.

Em relação ao setor de manutenção e reparação de veículos automóveis, foi notado um abrandamento significativo de 4,6 p.p., chegando a uma taxa de variação de 3,9%. Essa desaceleração pode indicar desafios enfrentados por este segmento do comércio.

Nas métricas de emprego, as tendências mostraram variações distintas: o emprego no comércio apresentou uma queda de 1,6%, enquanto as remunerações aumentaram 4,8% e as horas trabalhadas cresceram 1,1% em termos homólogos. Comparativamente a junho, esses índices mostraram quedas e aumentos significativos, indicando uma dinâmica complexa no mercado de trabalho.

Woman forced to return €12,706.87 to Social Security for receiving widow's pension for 2 years without entitlement as first wife of deceased: court 'confirmed'

A woman in Spain received for more than two years part of her ex-husband's widow's pension, after the National Social Security Institute granted her that right in 2016. However, when the second wife claimed and obtained in court the full pension, Social Security demanded the return of €12,706.87. Although the woman claimed to have acted in good faith and correctly communicated her situation, the Superior Court of Justice of Andalusia confirmed that the legal obligation to return improperly received benefits remains, even when the error was the organization's own. The court reduced the initial amount of €16,869.68, eliminating interest and surcharges that Social Security failed to justify.
