Jornal de Mafra29 August 2026 at 09:53

DECO Proteste carries out a weekly analysis of the price of the Essential Food Products basket, composed of 63 products. In the week of August 19 to 26, 2026, the food basket costs €252.62, which represents a decrease of 94 cents (0.37% less) compared to the previous week. Since the beginning of the year, the basket price has decreased by €10.79 (4.46 percent less).

Last week, the product with the biggest increase was frankfurters, which rose +€0.27 (+16%). Since the beginning of 2026, the food product whose price increased the most was long-grain rice, which became more expensive by +€0.41 (+30%).

Russia's invasion of Ukraine put pressure on the agri-food sector, which was already facing consequences from the pandemic and drought. The limitation of raw material supply and the increase in production costs, namely fertilizers and energy, were reflected in price increases in international markets and, consequently, in consumer prices for products such as meat, fruit and vegetables, breakfast cereals and vegetable oil.
