An IBGE mapping reveals that Macaé, in Northern Rio de Janeiro, is the fourth city in the state with the greatest horizontal expansion between 2019 and 2022, driven by billions in oil royalties. The city exemplifies a dilemma: despite strong economic growth, it faces the advance of disorderly urban occupation and population increase. The Fronteira community, on Macaé's waterfront, is growing over the beach sand and being swallowed by the sea, while the Ajuda de Baixo neighborhood, without infrastructure and surrounded by green areas, has been attracting new residents since 2020 following the construction of a Minha Casa, Minha Vida housing complex, becoming a dense region according to IBGE.
