A mudslide hit the border between Nepal and Tibet last Wednesday (26th) causing the death of more than 580 people and the disappearance of 1,900. The force of the mudslide was so great that the episode was even recorded as a "seismic event" of magnitude 5.2, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
However, the phenomenon was not an earthquake, but rather the collapse of an ice block that caused the tragedy. The event was detected by seismographs due to the intense energy released by the mudslide.
After the passage of the mudslide, residents of the region need to deal with other consequences, including the debris left by the disaster, with which they may come into contact. If they do not use protective equipment, such as boots, they may contract the Leptospira bacteria, which resides in some animals, mainly rats and other rodents, responsible for leptospirosis.
Leptospirosis is an acute febrile infectious disease that causes symptoms such as high fever, diarrhea, chills, muscle pain (myalgia), with strong discomfort in the calves, and headache.
