Prohibition of bivalve harvesting and capture

Jornal de Mafra29 August 2026 at 08:07

A communication was issued regarding the prohibition of harvesting and commercialization of bivalve mollusks, echinoderms, tunicates, and marine gastropods in Portugal, due to the presence of toxins and other reasons. This information was updated on August 28, 2026, referring to zone L5a Litoral Peniche – Cabo Raso.

In the area covered by the notice, the limpet and mussel have been prohibited. The limpet is prohibited due to the presence of chemical contaminants, specifically cadmium, while the mussel is prohibited due to lipophilic biotoxins that cause diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP). The sea urchin remains open for harvesting in this area.

The Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) provides a bulletin with all prohibitions in force, as well as an information platform on the concentration of harmful phytoplankton. The article also includes information on alert thresholds for harmful phytoplankton and sanitary classification classes based on E. coli levels.

Bivalve
