More than 150 thousand children under 12 continue waiting to have a family doctor

Público29 August 2026 at 07:01

More than 150 thousand children under 12 continue without an assigned family doctor in Portugal. This situation affects a significant number of young patients who do not have regular medical care through a family doctor.

The data is provided by the Central Administration of the Health System, which tracks the evolution of the number of patients with a family doctor between the months of July and August. These numbers allow monitoring the evolution of this issue over time.

Among the elderly population, almost 250 thousand people aged 65 or over also do not have an assigned family doctor. This age group is particularly vulnerable and frequently requires more regular medical care.

The situation reflects a significant gap in access to primary healthcare in Portugal, affecting both young and elderly populations, who are groups particularly dependent on the health system.

In a statement, the JPP stated that this measure is "the inevitable reflection of a health system in collapse" and that it reveals the deficiencies in responding to the needs of users who require social support after hospital discharge.
