The United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) launches this Sunday morning the Roman space telescope, designed to explore some of the greatest mysteries of the universe. Named after NASA's first chief astronomer, Nancy Grace Roman, the new space telescope combines a 300-megapixel infrared camera with a field of view at least a hundred times larger than that of the famous Hubble Space Telescope, responsible for major discoveries of the universe since its launch in 1990.
Brazil will have a strategic role in this endeavor. Researchers from the Computing and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (LAB-IA), at the Brazilian Center for Physical Research (CBPF), developed an astronomical alert system that will be used to help scientists identify the most relevant phenomena recorded by the observatory.
According to the American space agency, the combination of technology and field of view will allow Roman to capture images with a resolution comparable to that of Hubble, but covering much larger areas of the sky. This will enable studies on dark energy, exoplanets, and other cosmic phenomena.
