Senator and presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro (PL) announced during a Globo TV interview that he intends to appoint doctor Claudio Lottenberg for the Ministry of Health if elected in October. The appointment was presented as part of his plans for a potential government.
However, Claudio Lottenberg, although he showed closeness to former president Jair Bolsonaro, was critical of federal management during the Covid-19 pandemic. In an interview to GLOBO published in March 2021, a period when Brazil was facing the worst moment of the health crisis with daily records of cases and deaths, the ophthalmologist stated that he didn't see great leaders appearing without masks.
The doctor criticized the lack of coordinated action against Covid-19 and declared that, if there was an entity that didn't create an inspirational climate, it was the federal government. At that time, the vaccination campaign was advancing slowly in the country after the federal government's resistance to closing agreements with the Butantan Institute and with Pfizer.
