BES Debtor Only Has 58 Thousand Euros to Pay Debts of 393 Million

Correio da Manhã29 August 2026 at 01:30

A debtor of Banco Espírito Santo (BES) has only 58 thousand euros to satisfy debts totaling 393 million euros. This situation was revealed in the context of the final phase of the bank's liquidation process, which collapsed in 2014.

The Portuguese State appears as the largest creditor at this stage of the process, but its recovery will be minimal. Of the 12.5 million euros that the State was owed, it is expected to receive only 26 thousand euros, representing a negligible fraction of the amount in question.

This disparity between the amount owed and the available assets illustrates the enormous difficulties that creditors face in recovering their claims. The situation highlights the consequences of the BES collapse for the various stakeholders involved in the process.
