The president of the United States, Donald Trump, announced this Friday that he intends to allow farmers and ranchers to process their own production, in a new offensive against the beef monopoly in the country. Trump said on social media that he authorized the drafting of legal documents to "break this powerful monopoly" among meatpackers, but did not detail what changes he intends to promote.
Among the four companies that dominate this market are two Brazilian ones: JBS and National Beef, controlled by MBRF. The measure aims to decentralize meat processing in the country.
The American president, however, did not specify which alterations he intends to implement. It is also not clear if he has the authority to change these rules nor what the practical effect of the measure would be. Analysts question the legal viability and real impacts of the proposal.
