The Constitutional Court considered, unanimously, constitutional the eleven norms of the return law analyzed at the request of the President of the Republic. This decision now allows the President to enact or veto the bill.
The Minister of Internal Administration, Leitão Amaro, defended that this legislation helps authorities combat illegal immigration. The return law establishes rules on the expulsion of foreign citizens in irregular situations from Portuguese territory.
The bill was being analyzed by the Constitutional Court after being sent for preventive review by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. The unanimous decision of the constitutional judges means that the law does not violate the fundamental principles of the Portuguese Constitution.
With the approval of the Constitutional Court, the President of the Republic now has the possibility to enact the law, making it come into force, or to veto it, returning it to Parliament for new discussion and voting.
