Rio government sends bill to Alerj to resume aviation kerosene tax incentive and increase flights

oglobo28 August 2026 at 22:17

The Government of Rio de Janeiro forwarded to Alerj a bill to resume a tax incentive for the airline sector. The proposal addresses the deferral of ICMS on aviation kerosene departure operations in the state. The objective is to make aircraft refueling in Rio more competitive and prevent airlines from preferring other states, such as São Paulo and Minas Gerais, which already have similar regimes.

The benefit that Rio had, in effect until the end of 2025, was not renewed in time and resulted in the loss of the differentiated regime. The measure is considered strategic to consolidate Galeão as a major connection center and boost the economy.

The airline sector has a direct impact on tourism, trade, and job creation. Last year, the airline activity supported more than 20 thousand direct and indirect jobs and generated income of R$ 1.4 billion in salaries, according to data from the Brazilian Companies Association.
