German minister calls for banning AfD in the east of the country

A German minister called for the banning of the AfD party (Alternative for Germany) in the eastern part of the country. German leaders advocate fighting the party's "ethno-nationalist" wing and claim that a ban is "legally viable".

The request comes following the "wide margin" results obtained by AfD in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, where the party achieved significant results in the regional elections.

German authorities consider that the party represents a threat to the democratic order, especially due to the influence of its radical wing identified as "ethno-nationalist".

The possibility of a ban has been discussed based on legal arguments, with advocates of this measure arguing that there are sufficient legal grounds to proceed with the process against the party.
