Wall Street closes session with slight losses. PayPal falls more than 12%

Jornal Económico28 August 2026 at 21:39

The New York Stock Exchange closed today in negative territory, with the Dow Jones surrendering 0.02% to 53,559.99 points, the S&P 500 losing 0.25% to 7,711.76 points and the Nasdaq retreating 0.52% to 26,402.42 points. The most expressive decline was recorded by PayPal, which plunged 12.7% after it was reported that a consortium that included Stripe and Advent International dropped the negotiations to acquire the payments company. Semiconductor-linked tech companies also pressured the indices, with Nvidia losing 4.6% and Marvell Technology retreating 10.3%.

The session was marked by the speech of the Federal Reserve chairman, Kevin Warsh, at the Jackson Hole symposium. Warsh reiterated the US central bank's commitment to the 2% inflation target and stated that, should prices not be converging toward that target, there would be "work to do". The statements reinforced expectations that the Fed may once again raise interest rates as early as September, with the implied probability of a hike at the next meeting increasing from 35.9% to approximately 57.5%.

Conversely, Gap gained approximately 13%, after announcing the appointment of a new head for Old Navy and improving its earnings forecast. In the oil market, Brent closed at $89.31 per barrel, down 0.43%, and West Texas Intermediate at $83.40, with a decline of approximately 0.2%. For the week, Brent lost 5.4% and WTI retreated 4.2%, in a context of signs of increased crude flows through alternative routes and expectations of a possible reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
