Union alerts to lack of prison guards

The Prison Guards Union alerted to the serious lack of prison guards in penal institutions. The guard workforce fell by 844 elements over 23 years, representing a significant reduction in human resources available to ensure the security and functioning of prisons.

In parallel, the prison population remained stable, which worsens the situation, as the same guards have to manage a similar or growing number of inmates with fewer human resources than before.

ASP/CGP, the association that represents prison guards, called for structural measures to be taken to stop this trend of workforce reduction and guarantee adequate working conditions and security.

The union also requested parliamentary monitoring of this issue, showing concern about the lack of political interest in resolving this problem that directly affects the Portuguese prison system.

Livre respects Constitutional Court decision, but maintains criticism of asylum law

The Livre party announced that it respects the decision of the Constitutional Court that considered constitutional the norms of the diploma on granting asylum and return of foreigners, but reiterated its criticisms of the law. Deputy Paulo Muacho stated that the fact that the CC did not declare the law unconstitutional does not mean it is a good law, highlighting concerns about the possibility of detention and expulsion of migrant children.
