Prison guards' union alerts government to historic low in prison staff-to-prisoner ratio

The prison guards' union today alerted to the increasingly smaller ratio of prison guards per prisoner, considering that current values represent historic lows in this century.

The union called on the government to take "structural measures and not just ad hoc responses" to resolve the situation of staff shortages in prisons.

The alert comes in the context of growing concern about the operating conditions of the prison system and about the capacity of prison guards to ensure security within correctional facilities.

Livre respects Constitutional Court decision, but maintains criticism of asylum law

The Livre party announced that it respects the decision of the Constitutional Court that considered constitutional the norms of the diploma on granting asylum and return of foreigners, but reiterated its criticisms of the law. Deputy Paulo Muacho stated that the fact that the CC did not declare the law unconstitutional does not mean it is a good law, highlighting concerns about the possibility of detention and expulsion of migrant children. The party also believes there is room for political veto by the President of the Republic. The CC decision came after Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa requested preventive review of the decree approved by the Assembly of the Republic in July, which includes the extension of the temporary installation period to 180 days, possibility of separation of parents and children, and expulsion of minors.
