The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, promulgated the law that prohibits the use of mobile phones and smartphones in schools until the 9th year of schooling. This measure had been approved by the Council of Ministers on July 30.
The law establishes specific restrictions on the use of electronic devices in Portuguese schools, covering students in basic education until the end of 9th grade, which corresponds to approximately 14-15 years of age.
In addition to this prohibition, the President of the Republic also promulgated another law approved at the same Council of Ministers meeting on July 30, which amends the exceptional and temporary measures implemented to address the shortage of teachers in schools.
The second approved law also concerns the regulation of the scientific requirements necessary for the hiring of teachers, seeking to establish clearer criteria for the teacher recruitment process.
