Seguro promulgates ban on smartphones until 9th grade. New rules in effect from January 1, 2027

President of the Republic António José Seguro has promulgated the decree banning smartphone use in schools until 9th grade. This decision extends the rules that already existed for the earlier years of primary education.

The new rules will take effect from January 1, 2027, giving schools time to prepare for the implementation of this measure.

The ban covers all educational establishments up to the ninth year, which includes lower secondary school (3rd cycle of basic education). The objective of this measure is to reduce student distraction during the school day.
