Heavy rain on the way: depression located over Portugal to bring intense rain and strong wind especially to this region

Postal do Algarve28 August 2026 at 14:00

The last weekend of August will be marked by more unstable atmospheric circulation over part of the Portuguese island territory. A depression located north of the Azores will bring intense rain and strong wind, with greater impact on the Azores than on Madeira. The forecast extends until Wednesday, 2 September, but precipitation and wind values may still change, according to Meteored.

In the Azores, the first changes should arrive at the Western Group already this Saturday, with Flores and Corvo recording periods of rain accompanied by gusts that may approach 45 kilometres per hour. On Sunday morning, a more organized band of cloud cover and precipitation should approach the archipelago, with rain becoming more frequent on the western islands and then advancing to the Central Group, including São Miguel through irregular showers. Continuous precipitation is not expected, but rather alternation between periods of rain and temporary clear spells.

By Wednesday, projections point to accumulations close to 24 millimetres on the island of Flores, the highest value in the archipelago. On Faial, around 15 millimetres may accumulate, on Corvo approximately 14 millimetres, while São Jorge and Terceira should record between nine and ten millimetres. São Miguel may receive between six and eight millimetres and Santa Maria will be the least affected island, with values close to two millimetres. On Monday, wind gusts may exceed 40 kilometres per hour in the Western and Central groups, although maximum temperatures should rise slightly, ranging between 24 and 29 °C.

In Madeira, this Friday will be marked by greater cloudiness and some light showers, concentrated mainly on the northern slope and highlands, while the southern coast will benefit from longer clear spells. Wind will blow from the northeast, possibly reaching gusts close to 40 kilometres per hour at the eastern and western extremes of the island, with maximum temperatures reaching 26 °C in Funchal and 27 °C in Porto Santo. During Saturday's early hours, showers will continue to affect mainly São Vicente, Santana and Curral das Freiras, with very reduced accumulations, close to 0.3 to 0.4 millimetres.

Madeira terá aguaceiros fracos no norte
