Álvares Cabral frigate crosses the Equator

Jornal do Algarve28 August 2026 at 15:22

The frigate NRP Álvares Cabral crossed the Equator during participation in the "Open Sea Initiative 2026", marking the passage from the northern hemisphere to the southern hemisphere. The crossing was marked by the ship's commander and the youngest crew member, who painted red the horn located at the bow of the ship.

The Navy describes the moment as one of the most emblematic of naval tradition, highlighting its significance for life on board and for the spirit of mission among crews. This tradition is maintained among generations of sailors.

The NRP Álvares Cabral is currently participating in the "Open Sea Initiative 2026", a mission that aims to contribute to the fulfillment of Portugal's international commitments to the countries of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries and other Gulf of Guinea states.

The mission also aims to reinforce cooperative security promoted by the international community, in particular by the European Union, within the framework of Coordinated Maritime Presences along the west African coast.
