Harald V, Norway's king, died at 89 in 2026, ending a reign that began in 1991. Born in 1937, the Norwegian monarch was described as the one who managed not only to preserve the monarchy, but to make it a meaningful institution in a modern democracy.

The king's greatest achievement was making the monarchy seem egalitarian in one of the world's most egalitarian societies. His legacy includes a break with the traditional rules of the Royal House regarding marriage, demonstrating openness to more modern values.
