Twins born but from different families: unusual case reaches court

Notícias de Coimbra28 August 2026 at 14:52

A 27-year-old woman gave birth to twins in Australia, but the babies have no biological relationship to each other. This extremely rare case is being discussed in court.

The phenomenon by which two twins are born from different biological parents is called heteropaternal superfecundation. It occurs when a woman releases two eggs during the same menstrual cycle and they are fertilized by sperm from different men.

This type of situation is considered extremely rare in medicine, with only a few cases documented worldwide. In the case in question, the twins were born in Australia and the situation ended up reaching the judicial system.

The Australian court now has to examine the circumstances of the case to determine issues related to paternity and parental responsibilities for each of the babies.
