Forest fires represent dangers that extend beyond the flames, affecting people through smoke that can worsen chronic respiratory diseases. Pulmonologist Marcos Oliveira, from the Local Health Unit of Guarda, warns that there is no fixed distance from which smoke ceases to pose a risk to health.
Fire smoke is particularly dangerous for people with respiratory diseases, potentially causing worsening of symptoms and serious complications. The specialist emphasizes that this reality affects not only those in the immediate vicinity of burned areas, but also populations at considerable distances.
One of the most vulnerable groups are patients who depend on home oxygen therapy. According to Marcos Oliveira, these patients face increased risks when power outages occur, which can compromise the functioning of equipment necessary for their breathing. Evacuation situations also pose significant challenges to continuity of care.
In the interview, the pulmonologist addresses the care that should be anticipated and explains how to ensure continuity of treatment in emergency situations during fires. The objective is to provide practical guidance so that patients and their families can prepare adequately before critical situations arise.
