Norwegians pay tribute to King Harald V

Norway's King Harald V died this Friday, at age 89. The Norwegian monarch passed away after a long period of illness, having faced health problems in the final years of his reign.

During the morning following his death, many Norwegians rushed to the Royal Palace in Oslo to lay flowers and pay a final tribute to the monarch. The citizens wanted to show their respect and sorrow for the king who ruled the country for more than three decades.

Harald V ascended to the throne in 1991, succeeding his father, King Olav V. His long reign was marked by the closeness he maintained with the Norwegian people, who now prepare for a new chapter in the country's monarchy history.

Several Portuguese cities are eliminating shared electric scooter services, with Vila Nova de Gaia, Braga and Espinho already moving forward with the end of these operations in 2026. The main concerns of the municipalities relate to road safety, disorganized parking and conflicts in public space. In Lisbon, the Automobile Club of Portugal proposed a municipal referendum on the topic, while companies like Bolt, Lime and Bird defend that they have adapted their operations to municipal rules and point to the need for better infrastructure and greater enforcement. Coimbra acknowledges it does not yet have conditions to provide the service, and in Porto a study on the accident rates associated with these vehicles is underway. According to data from the National Road Safety Authority, in 2025 there were 4,296 accidents involving velocipedes, including scooters, resulting in 28 deaths.

King Harald V: understanding the illness that led the monarch to death at 89

Norway's King Harald V died at 89 on Friday (28), had been hospitalized since August 17 at Oslo's Rikshospitalet due to complications from hemolytic anemia, an autoimmune disease that causes the accelerated destruction of red blood cells by the body's own antibodies. The condition can be of three types: warm (antibodies react at 37°C), cold (destruction occurs between 4°C and 18°C) or mixed (both coexist). The cause is not always identified, but it can be secondary to other autoimmune diseases such as lymphomas, leukemias, lupus, or rheumatoid arthritis.

"Even if it rains, we couldn't miss going to S. João d'Arga"

Hundreds of pilgrims defied bad weather to participate in the traditional pilgrimage of São João d'Arga, in Alto Minho, climbing on foot, by bicycle, motorbike or car to the sanctuary. Many completed the three laps around the monastery and attended the eucharist, which took place with the barracks full of worshippers. Paula Alpuim, from Vila Fria, assured that the rain did not discourage participants, highlighting that the journey from S. Lourenço da Montaria was no more difficult than in previous years. The celebration of the eucharist was scheduled for 4:30 PM, followed by the procession and evening entertainment with brass bands and traditional folk music with concertinas.
