Portuguese professor Joaquim João Sousa, from the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, identified risks of a new disaster in the Braskem mining area in Maceió. The academic carried out soil mapping of the five neighborhoods that suffered subsidence in the capital of Alagoas.

The Portuguese professor's study revealed specific risks of landslides in these areas. The research focused on the geotechnical analysis of the terrain that has already presented subsidence problems.

The situation occurs in the capital of Alagoas, where Braskem's mining activity caused instability in entire neighborhoods. The mapping carried out by the professor aims to identify the most vulnerable areas.

The Portuguese researcher concludes that there is imminent danger of new collapses in the mapped slopes. The work seeks to support prevention and risk mitigation measures for the affected population.
