Estarreja is one of three finalist cities for the European Green Leaf 2028, an award given by the European Commission to medium-sized cities that stand out for environmental sustainability. Of the 27 candidate municipalities from across Europe, only three reached the final phase, which will take place in October with presentations to an international jury. The European Green Leaf distinguishes cities with populations between 20,000 and 100,000 in seven key areas, including air quality, water management, biodiversity and circular economy. The Mayor, Isabel Simões Pinto, stated that this recognition validates a sustainability strategy built over the years with community involvement. The winners will be announced on October 8 in Guimarães, European Green Capital 2026.
