Foreign Affairs reduces to three the number of missing Spaniards in Nepal flood

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General28 August 2026 at 09:40

The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs reduced this Friday from four to three the number of Spanish citizens considered missing in the mudslide that occurred on Wednesday in northern Nepal. The change in the Spanish casualty count comes as local authorities continue search and rescue operations in the affected region.

The mudslide was probably caused by the collapse of a glacier in the mountains of northern Nepal. The natural phenomenon triggered a wave of water and mud that devastated several villages in the region, destroying homes, roads, and infrastructure.

The disaster has already caused at least 472 confirmed dead, according to the latest available count. Additionally, approximately 1,500 people remain missing, which raises fears that the death toll will continue to rise significantly in the coming days as rescue teams find more bodies among the rubble.
