Hungary quadruples minimum pension. "It is unacceptable" that thousands of people cannot pay bills, says Magyar

CNN Portugal28 August 2026 at 11:06

Hungary has quadrupled the minimum pension, increasing the amount from 80 euros per month that had been fixed since 2008 and had not undergone any changes since then.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced this significant measure for the country's pension system.

According to the statement attributed to Magyar, it is considered unacceptable that thousands of people cannot pay their basic bills.

The increase represents one of the most substantial changes to the Hungarian social security system in recent years, responding to criticism about the insufficiency of the minimum pension amount.
