Hundreds of tons of fish die in Hungary due to drought

Euronews Portugal28 August 2026 at 09:19

The drought and lack of water caused the death of hundreds of tons of fish at Hungary's largest fish farming complex, located in Rétimajor. The incident represents a significant loss for the country's aquaculture sector.

The fish farm complex manager attributes responsibility to the irrigation practiced upstream, which according to him has reduced the available water flow for the facilities. This situation contributed directly to the death of the fish.

The water authority, on the other hand, defends that the distribution of the little available flow was done correctly. There is thus a conflict of versions between the complex manager and the entity responsible for water resource management.

The case illustrates the consequences of prolonged drought in Hungary, which affects not only agriculture and human consumption, but also sectors such as fish farming, where continuous water availability is essential for the survival of the animals.
