Norway's King Harald V dies at age 89

Norway's King Harald V died on Friday at age 89 at Oslo's National Hospital (Rikshospitalet) at 6:35 a.m. The Royal Palace announced the death with deep sadness, stating that the monarch died peacefully. Harald had been hospitalized since August 17 and his health had worsened in recent days.

The king suffered from hemolytic anemia, a blood disease characterized by the abnormally rapid destruction of red blood cells. In recent weeks, he also received treatment for a bacterial blood infection.

With Harald V's death, Crown Prince Haakon, 53, automatically becomes the new king of Norway. The transition occurs immediately, following the country's succession line.
