What is the rule that banned generative AI songs from Australian charts

oglobo28 August 2026 at 08:30

The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA), the entity that oversees Australia's most popular music charts, announced new rules that prohibit songs created totally or mostly by generative artificial intelligence from appearing on the country's charts. The changes take effect on Friday. Recordings that use AI as a supporting tool will continue to be allowed.

The measure follows a global movement by the music industry and authorities to create clearer regulations on the use of AI in music. The goal is to ensure adequate copyright protections for original artists who see their works being used to train artificial intelligence models without authorization.

ARIA's CEO, Annabelle Herd, stated that music charts should reflect what consumers are actually listening to and supporting, guaranteeing authenticity in the Australian music scene. The decision positions Australia among the countries seeking to establish clear limits for the use of artificial intelligence in artistic creation.
