Iran: US Army says Strait of Hormuz is free of mines and open

Jornal Económico28 August 2026 at 08:31

The United States Central Military Command (Centcom) declared the Strait of Hormuz open to international maritime traffic, after American forces successfully removed the maritime mines that had been placed in the waterway months earlier by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Centcom commander, Admiral Brad Cooper, announced that the maritime routes are now mine-free, praising the work of the Armed Forces in an operation that took place under circumstances described as challenging and dangerous.

The operations featured the participation of more than 20 warships and hundreds of aircraft, in a context where approximately 50,000 soldiers are enforcing a blockade against Iran, preventing it from exporting oil from its ports. According to Cooper, no ship entered or left an Iranian port without American authorization, and passages were only allowed for humanitarian reasons. On the same date, August 27, Centcom announced that it had diverted 75 commercial ships, disabled three and boarded two to ensure compliance with the blockade.

In parallel, US President Donald Trump published on the Truth Social platform a map of the Strait of Hormuz declaring it as new American territory, alongside the flags of Puerto Rico, the Federated States of Micronesia and the Marshall Islands, among other territories.

The Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Arsenio Domínguez, warned that the strait remains unsafe and urged shipowners and shipping companies to avoid the crossing. Domínguez noted that nearly six thousand crew members are trapped in the conflict zone for almost six months, with no possibility of withdrawal, and that approximately 70 vessels were attacked and 20 maritime workers died as a result of the conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran.
