On Monday, August 24, the São Paulo State Health Department confirmed the first two human cases of West Nile Fever in Brazil. One of the patients is a 34-year-old woman, resident of Ribeirão Preto, who has already recovered from the disease. The other is an 18-year-old young woman, from São José do Rio Preto, who remains hospitalized.
The first patient had recently traveled to the Amazon region, but the probable place of infection for both cases is still under investigation by health authorities. So far, the specific symptoms presented by the two patients have not been disclosed.
On the same day, the state of Santa Catarina confirmed the death of a 77-year-old woman, resident of Imbituba, on the coast of the state. She died on August 8 after presenting fever and progressing to a severe condition.
