Tension with Iran, US debt and AI fever mark the pulse of markets

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General28 August 2026 at 06:50

Markets face the return of summer marked by increased tension between the United States and Iran, the deterioration of US public accounts and the boost from large artificial intelligence companies. These three factors define the pulse of financial markets during this period.

The Ibex 35 stands out for trading at historic highs, driven by the excellent performance of the banking sector. This sector has presented solid profit margins thanks to high interest rates and is distributing dividends never seen before.

At the same time, large technology companies linked to artificial intelligence continue to exert a strong boost on markets, sustaining investor interest and contributing to the positive dynamics of stock exchanges.

Venezuela: USA negotiating with country participation in oil fields

The United States is negotiating with Venezuela's interim government to acquire stakes in more than a dozen of the country's oil fields, including the possibility of a 100-year concession, according to Axios and Bloomberg. The talks, led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and interim President Delcy Rodríguez, aim to substantially increase US oil reserves and allow greater participation of US companies in the exploration and development of Venezuelan oil assets. Venezuela has the world's largest proven oil reserves, but its production has remained below historical levels due to infrastructure degradation and the economic crisis. The negotiations come after Washington eased sanctions to allow American companies to return to the country.
