Porous rocks can store energy to power a city

Researchers from Nova University of Lisbon and the University of Lisbon discovered that porous geological reservoirs located between 1,000 and 2,500 meters depth have the capacity to store up to one terawatt-hour of renewable energy, enough to power an entire city. The phenomenon will begin at 10:24 PM Brasília time, when the Moon enters the penumbra. The partial phase begins at 11:34 PM, when the satellite begins to enter the umbra, the darkest part of Earth's shadow. The peak is expected at 1:13 AM on Friday, when 96.2% of the lunar disk will be inside the umbra, making the darkening more evident.

Two thousand buried underpants mapped the hidden life in the soil

More than 2,000 pairs of cotton underpants were buried in Switzerland as part of a citizen science project to assess soil health. The initiative, called the "Underpants Proof" (Beweisstück Unterhose), was launched in 2021 by the University of Zurich and Agroscope, the Swiss Federal Centre for Agricultural Research. Around 1,000 citizen scientists took part, burying pure cotton underpants for months and then unearthing them to analyze the degree of decomposition. The faster the underpants decompose, the healthier and more biologically active the soil is, as this indicates a greater presence of microorganisms and earthworms. The method demonstrates that advanced technology is not needed to evaluate life underground.
