The municipality of Albergaria-A-Velha reached an agreement with the family owning a rustic land that is crucial for the construction of the future city park, also designated as green corridor. The land is located next to the so-called Largo dos Chorões, in Engenheiro Duarte Pacheco Street, Rua 1º de Dezembro and Rua Alexandre Albuquerque. The property was involved in an expropriation process initiated in 2024, which has now been resolved through this agreement.

The agreement provides for the payment by the municipal council of a total amount of almost 210 thousand euros, referring to parcels with a real area of 17,512 square meters. The land is located north of the city center of Albergaria-a-Velha and will have an approximate extension of 3.7 hectares.

The area is crossed by a watercourse and is currently composed of corn fields and abandoned land. The project for the future park includes the creation of balanced and modeled ecosystems, organic paths and functional spaces, ecological relationships, crossing zones and places for enjoyment and pedagogy, all articulated with a system of equipment and urban furniture.

Almost 120 trees of different species will be planted, including silver birch, Mediterranean hackberry, Judas tree, ash, poplar and pedunculate oak, as well as herbaceous plants and shrubs such as lavender, rosemary, thyme, myrtle, rosemary and cistus, offering the population a green space of high landscape and social value.

The president of the Póvoa de Varzim City Council, Andrea Silva, announced that she will propose the extinction of the municipal company Varzim Lazer at the executive meeting on August 31st, guaranteeing the integration of workers into the local authority. The mayor explained that a new court ruling now allows for safeguarding this integration, something that was not possible before. The decision comes after intense local political debate, including an open letter from Aliança Poveira and a request for exoneration of the Board of Directors by CHEGA, which is part of the company's management. Sustainability without justice is not enough

This opinion article addresses the cyclical discussion about the sustainability of Social Security in Portugal, warning that, although the warnings about increasing life expectancy and the decreasing worker-to-pensioner ratio are pertinent, the fundamental question of the system's justice is rarely raised first. The text criticizes the tendency to focus only on demographic and financial numbers, without first questioning whether the proposed solutions are equitable for all citizens.
