Google earthquake alerts now work in Portugal: see how to activate and learn about the alternative for iPhone

Google has activated the Earthquake Alert System in Portugal for Android devices, which uses smartphone sensors to detect earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or higher and send alerts to users in potentially affected areas. The feature, which was announced in 2020 and arrived on Android in 2021, is available in 98 countries and has already detected more than 18 thousand earthquakes worldwide. Portuguese users can activate the service in their phone settings, under "Safety and emergency." iPhone users, on the other hand, do not have an equivalent integrated feature, so the recommended alternative is the official application of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), although this does not function as an early warning alert. Portugal currently does not have a national earthquake early warning system.
