Postpartum psychosis is a rare but serious psychiatric emergency, in which the woman loses contact with reality, and anyone can develop it even without a history of mental health problems. In Portugal, approximately 80 cases are estimated per year, but there is no specialized response for these situations. Ana Vale, a specialist mental health nurse, has already followed some of these cases, warning about the need for greater attention to this condition.

New Intensive Care Unit has already monitored more than 70 patients

The new Intensive Medicine Unit (PAMI) of the Local Health Unit of the Northeast has already followed more than 70 patients in its first month of operation. The PAMI ensures the permanent presence of an intensivist doctor 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with the objective of bringing intensive medicine closer to critical patients and reducing the time for specialized response. The diversified healthcare activity included situations of severe infectious disease, shock, respiratory failure, cardiovascular and neurological emergencies, hemorrhage, trauma, intoxication, and cardiorespiratory arrest, allowing for timely recognition of clinical severity and initiation of resuscitation and advanced support measures.
