Study reveals how atmospheric dryness limits precipitation caused by typhoons and tropical cyclones
A study published in the journal Nature Geoscience reveals that although a warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture, it also becomes drier, which suppresses precipitation and acts as a brake on tropical cyclone precipitation. The researchers analyzed climate model projections and found that although physics suggests global warming should make typhoons and hurricanes more intense and with more abundant rainfall, atmospheric dryness significantly limits this precipitation. The precipitation caused by tropical cyclones is determined by storm intensity, atmospheric moisture, and the efficiency with which that moisture is converted into precipitation, with some climate models predicting much smaller increases in precipitation than thermodynamics alone would predict.
