Visit reveals little-known page of Tavira's Jewish history

Postal do Algarve26 August 2026 at 15:10

On August 29 at 10:30, a guided visit to the exhibition "Jews in Tavira: fragments of a history" will take place at the Islamic Nucleus of the Municipal Museum of Tavira, led by historian Marco Sousa Santos. The exhibition presents documents, works of art, and archaeological artifacts that recover the memory of the Jewish community that lived in the city until 1496, some of them with no known parallels anywhere else in the world. Participation is limited to 15 people, and prior registration is required.

Participação limitada a 15 pessoas

After graduating in traditional Japanese painting in Kyoto, she emigrated to the United States in the 1950s, where she gained international recognition and influenced contemporaries such as Andy Warhol. In New York, she staged anti-war protests in Central Park and collaborated twice with Louis Vuitton, in 2012 and 2023. She returned to Japan in 1973 due to mental health issues, voluntarily committing herself to a psychiatric institution in 1990, from where she continued to create. She received numerous awards, including the Praemium Imperiale in 2006, and left a legacy that will be preserved by her company.
