Iceland EU referendum: "No" leads with 51.8% as count continues

The referendum on Iceland's accession to the European Union is being decided by a narrow margin, with "No" leading with 51.8% of the votes when the count was still ongoing. The vote took place in a context of prolonged debate about the country's relationship with Brussels.

Iceland's rural constituencies showed a clear tendency for "No" to European accession, reflecting a historical position of greater skepticism towards European integration in the smaller communities away from the capital.

On the other hand, the two electoral constituencies of Reykjavik leaned towards "Yes", suggesting a significant geographical divide between the capital and the rest of the country. Two constituencies were still to be announced when the count was ongoing.
