Virgílio Pereira was a teacher who always claimed he did not want to be a politician, but he ended up having a prominent political career that began right after April 25, 1974, on the Administrative Commission of the Funchal City Council.

Throughout his political career, Virgílio Pereira served in the European Parliament and the Assembly of the Republic, accumulating extensive legislative and political experience at both national and European levels.

For a long time he was independent, later joining the PSD, the party through which he became vice-president. However, he never gave up expressing his opinion, even when it ran against the party's dominant line.

Everyone addressed him as "Professor Virgílio," a title that reflected his academic background and became the most well-known way to refer to him.
