A decade of impeachment: ten politicians who chose Dilma's exit have Lula's support in the election

Dilma Rousseff's impeachment was finalized on August 31, 2016, exactly a decade ago. The process was traumatic for the PT, which was also facing Operation Lava-Jato investigations at that time. Ten deputies or senators who voted in favor of the president's removal today make up majoritarian coalitions supported by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the states, seeking state governorships or Senate seats.

These politicians are alongside the PT member in their attempt to reach elected positions in this year's elections. Since then, the Brazilian political landscape has changed radically: Lula was arrested, the PT lost the 2018 election to Jair Bolsonaro, and the party managed a comeback four years ago, when Lula was elected president again.

With his return to the Palácio do Planalto, Lula regained allies he had lost and attracted new political partners. The changes in Brazilian politics since the impeachment have caused former adversaries to now join the coalitions supporting his candidacy.
