New endemic lizard species discovered in Peru living at more than 4,000 meters altitude

A new lizard species was discovered in the highlands of Puno, Peru. It is the Liolaemus yawar, belonging to the Liolaemus montanus group, recorded in the district of Putina, in the province of San Antonio de Putina, at more than 4,100 meters above sea level.

The name yawar, which means "blood" in Quechua, alludes to the intense blood-red coloration of adult males, one of the most distinctive characteristics of this species. The name also acknowledges the cultural and linguistic value of Quechua in the Andes, the region where this new species lives.

To identify it as a new species, researchers analyzed morphological characteristics and molecular and phylogenetic evidence. The Liolaemus yawar can reach up to 91.6 millimeters in length and has a particular combination of characteristics that distinguishes it from other species in the group.
