Authorities from China and Nepal updated the death toll after the mud avalanche that caused flooding at the border between the two countries on Wednesday (26). As of Saturday night (29), 691 bodies had been recovered, with 675 on the Nepali side and 16 in the Chinese territory of Tibet. Seven additional corpses were recovered downstream, in northern Indian territory, and are undergoing identification process.
About 3,000 people remain missing, according to the governments. Nepal reports 2,426 missing and Tibet, 546, including Nepalis, Tibetans and foreigners.
Rescue operations may be interrupted. Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) issued an alert in the early hours of Sunday (30) about rising water levels of a river, which could cause new flooding.
At the moment, rescue teams are working with doubled caution due to the risk of new storms in the region.
