Italy announced plans to ban elderly people over 85 years old from driving under certain conditions, due to the high number of accidents involving this age group. The proposed measures included the prohibition of using highways, the impossibility of driving with any level of alcohol in the blood, and the restriction of traveling more than 100 kilometers.
The Italian government justified these restrictions with concerning statistics about traffic accidents caused by elderly drivers. The proposal was part of an effort to increase road safety in the country.
However, after the negative reaction from public opinion and possibly from representative organizations of the elderly, the Italian government backed down on the decision. The so-called "reverse" meant the temporary abandonment of these restrictive measures.
The episode illustrates the challenge of balancing road safety with the rights and mobility of older citizens, generating a debate about the best way to deal with elderly drivers without discriminating against them.
