Iceland votes on return to EU negotiating table

Polls closed at 11pm, Portugal time, this Saturday, in an Icelandic referendum on the return to European Union accession negotiations. Icelanders were called upon to vote on this issue in a ballot that took place throughout the day.

The electoral campaign was dominated by three main themes: the economy, interest rates and the country's sovereignty. These were the central arguments used both by supporters of yes and supporters of no to EU membership.

The first projections of the results, known after the polls closed, point to a victory for the "no" vote. This means that the majority of Icelandic voters will have rejected the return to European Union accession negotiations.
