Attention to expired bank cards: flaw may allow contactless purchases (without PIN) with your money

Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst discovered a vulnerability, dubbed "Zombie Card," that allows expired Visa bank cards to be used for contactless payments. The flaw exploits the fact that expiration date information in Visa contactless systems is not as protected as other security data. Using two Android phones with NFC, the researchers managed to relay information between the expired card and the payment terminal, changing the expiration date to deceive the system. The researchers recommend properly destroying expired cards by disabling the chip and the contactless antenna, and continuing to monitor account transactions even after card replacement.
