"Safety" fatigue among parents is increasing and this could be fatal

CNN Portugal29 August 2026 at 22:00

"Safety" fatigue is increasing among parents, and experts warn that this trend could have fatal consequences. This fatigue refers to the exhaustion parents feel when trying to keep up with all the available child safety advice and information.

The problem is aggravated by the fact that the most audible voices on social media that parents follow are rarely the most qualified to give safety advice. Information arrives constantly through multiple channels, making it difficult for parents to distinguish what is reliable from what is not.

Researchers who studied the most successful content on TikTok in the areas of "natural parenting" and well-being discovered last year that most health claims in these videos were misleading. This fact significantly contributes to the confusion and exhaustion that parents feel.

The study also revealed that 80% of this misinformation did not come from health professionals, but from other parents and influencers. This means that incorrect information is spreading rapidly through channels that parents trust, potentially endangering children's safety.

Attention to expired bank cards: flaw may allow contactless purchases (without PIN) with your money

Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst discovered a vulnerability, dubbed "Zombie Card," that allows expired Visa bank cards to be used for contactless payments. The flaw exploits the fact that expiration date information in Visa contactless systems is not as protected as other security data. Using two Android phones with NFC, the researchers managed to relay information between the expired card and the payment terminal, changing the expiration date to deceive the system. In tests, real purchases of $1, $100 and $500 were made. Other systems like Mastercard, American Express and Discover detected the manipulation. The researchers recommend properly destroying expired cards by disabling the chip and the contactless antenna, and continuing to monitor account transactions even after card replacement.
